IMLS EVALUATION SURVEY

You should be receiving an IMLS Evaluation Survey. All IMLS projects and services are reviewed every 5 years. This year IMLS provided funding to evaluate 10 programs provided with IMLS funding through the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. Two programs, Interlibrary Loan and Statewide Databases are being reviewed in-depth.

Watch for this important survey in your email.

Upgrade…. oh no!

We have just had a major upgrade to our ILS system, Voyager, so if you see any ODL Catalog links that don’t take you to the catalog please let us know. Melissa Askew is working her way through them, but we suspect there are a lot out there to change. Be sure and refresh your computers to get our latest version, which may mean you need to change your bookmarks.

We heard a strange rumor that we are going out of the ILL business. That is unequivocally not true! We will be doing Interlibrary Loan as long as we can or as long as the sun comes up. So don’t believe those nasty rumors; we just stop referring or shipping during the Holidays.

From our Oklahoma Center for the Book….

The Oklahoma Center for the Book, located in the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, has announced the national Letters About Literature (LAL) writing competition for the 2011-2012 academic school year.

Sponsored by the Library of Congress and Target Corporation, LAL offers students fourth grade through twelfth grade the opportunity to write a letter to an author (living or dead) from any genre—fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, contemporary or classic–explaining how that author’s work changed the student’s way of thinking about the world or themselves.

“Most everyone can relate to a favorite book or character,” said Oklahoma Center for the Book Executive Director Connie Armstrong. “Yet, not everyone responds to a particular book the same way. This program allows students to express how he or she as an individual relates to the book.”

Last year, approximately 70,000 students participated in the national writing contest. Oklahoma tripled its student participation. Three competition levels are offered: Level I for students in grades 4 through 6, Level II for students in grades 7 and 8, and Level III for students in grades 9 through 12.

Next spring, winning students from around the state, along with their parents, teachers, family, and friends will attend an awards ceremony sponsored by the Oklahoma Center for the Book and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. State winners will receive a Target gift card and cash prizes. The first place state winners will advance to the national competition, where six national winners and twelve national honorable mention winners will be announced.

The national winners will receive a $500 Target gift card, and will secure a $10,000 LAL Reading Promotion Grant in his/her name for a community or school library. The national honorable mention winners will receive a $100 Target gift care, and will secure a $1,000 LAL Reading Promotion Grant in his/her name for a community or school library.

Letters will be accepted September 15, 2011, through January 10, 2012. For more information regarding the program and to download an entry form log on to www.lettersaboutliterature.org.

August enhancements from OCLC

OCLC has successfully installed several new enhancements to WorldCat Resource Sharing. Every three months OCLC Delivery Services installs member-requested enhancements to the WorldCat Resource Sharing service. The next round of enhancements is scheduled for November. If you have any suggestions for small enhancements that would improve your workflow on OCLC WCRS let us know by sending a message to melvynt@oclc.org .

What is new? A brief description is provided below.

• New Lender String report. This report provides details about your library’s interactions with specific lenders up to one year in the past.
• Custom Holdings symbol searcher. A new way to quickly identify which Custom Holdings groups contain a specific symbol (up to 10 symbols), so you can modify your custom holdings groups as needed when changes occur.
• Expanded Custom Holding Group name limit. The current limit of 8 characters is expanded to 20 characters.
• New ILL workform fields to support article sharing. These fields provide the PubMed number (PMID) and the Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
• Email from anywhere. Allows your staff to send an email to another library from anywhere in an interlibrary loan workform.
• Improvements to Not Received feature. Now libraries can alert the lender that an item as not been received at any time after the lender updates the request to SHIPPED.
• Improvements to the OCLC Usage Statistics. New date format, Direct Request data,, additional data fields in some reports.
In early September, we will release the new short-term access to e-books from Ingram’s MyiLibrary through WorldCat Resource Sharing. The option will be available in ILLiad within the next several months. The new service option expands access to library content available through WorldCat Resource Sharing and ILLiad to include access to a subset of e-books from Ingram’s MyiLibrary e-book collection for a period of up to nine days. E-book loans are fee-based, set at 15 percent of the MyiLibrary price for access to the e-book. The fee is managed through the WorldCat Resource Sharing interlibrary loan Fee Management feature that supports payment of resource-sharing services through the library’s OCLC invoice.
